A Forecasting Platform User Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.
One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
Several of other individuals also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Grows
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
